AP Chemistry Score Distribution and Pass Rate

7+ years as an AP Chemistry educator 500+ students taught 65% score a 5

What this guide covers

AP Chemistry has a reputation as one of the hardest AP classes, and every year a new group of students walks into it a little intimidated by that reputation. The actual data tells a more encouraging story than the reputation does, as long as you know where to look.

The 2025 numbers

According to official College Board data, here's how the roughly worldwide pool of test takers scored on the May 2025 exam.

AP ScorePercent of students
517.8%
428.6%
331.5%
215.9%
16.2%

That puts the overall pass rate, a score of 3 or higher, at 77.9 percent, with a mean score of 3.36. For context, that pass rate was actually the highest among the major science AP exams that year, ahead of Biology, Physics 1, and Calculus AB.

So where does the "hard" reputation come from

It comes from the gap between a 3 and a 5, not from the gap between failing and passing. Most students who show up and put in consistent effort do pass. Climbing from a 3 to a 5 is a different challenge entirely, and it usually comes down to a specific, narrow set of skills rather than a general lack of ability.

In my experience, that gap almost always traces back to three things: doing calculations under real time pressure without small errors compounding, writing a scientific explanation clearly enough that a grader can award the point, and holding multiple ideas, like equilibrium and thermodynamics, in your head on the same free response question.

What actually moves you from passing to a 5

None of those three gaps get closed by reading more. They get closed by doing more real, timed practice with actual feedback, which is a different kind of studying than most students default to. A calculator and equation sheet won't fix a calculation habit that only works when you're not under time pressure. Only practicing under that pressure will.

65 percent of my students score a 5

Seven plus years as an AP Chemistry educator and 500 plus students taught. The number that matters most to me isn't the pass rate, it's how many of my students close that harder gap between a 3 and a 5.

Questions I get asked about scoring

What is the AP Chemistry pass rate?

77.9 percent of students scored a 3 or higher in 2025, which was actually the highest pass rate of any major science AP exam that year, ahead of Biology, Physics 1, and Calculus AB.

What percentage of students score a 5 on AP Chemistry?

17.8 percent in 2025. The mean score across all test takers was 3.36.

Is AP Chemistry harder than other AP science classes?

It has a reputation for difficulty, but the 2025 pass rate data tells a more nuanced story. Most students who put in consistent work do pass. The real difficulty shows up in the gap between passing and scoring a 5, which requires strong performance in both the multiple choice and free response sections at once.
